Photos disappearing 13 years 6 months ago #41407

Dom,

I have had this happen before, but I figured it was a fluke.  I inserted my photos, labeled and annotated a few of them and then had to leave so I shut down HIP.  I had saved the file several times and I saved it when I closed HIP.  When I opened the file last night, the photos were all gone.  The tabs were all still there, but no photos.

So I reloaded them, no big thing, and finished and generated the full report. Saved about ten times during all that process and saved when I closed.  Opened it up this morning before I emailed the report to add one note and the photos are all gone again.  They were there when I closed the program the last night, but again, the tabs are all there, the photos are not.  What have I done?

That actually used to be a common issue a few years back if you had two copies open at the same time.
Check you are using a new version of HIP to be safe. Are you on2.9.0?

There's a few reasons that I've seen this happening over the past few years though it's pretty rare. The first is guys forgetting to Save Inspection, which doesn't seem to be the case here. Another is low amount of memory (ram) or corrupt memory or a corrupt photo. Another is Java actually running it's updating while HIP is open. With any of these you have to Clear All Photos before batch adding again. I've been working on a few ways to detect and catch issues like this. I probably hear from an inspector once a month that runs into it though. 90% of the time it's because he's running very little ram and a ton of high resolution photos.

There might still be an actual bug in there somewhere but it's not something I've been able to reproduce. I have a company in Brazil that loads about 1500 pictures in per inspection and they had it happen a few times so they're running a special version of HIP right now which logs EVERYTHING so I can figure out exact causes and find a work around.

So Dominic I have a question.
With my Sony HXV5 my average shot is 3700x 2700 which is needed for picture study however of course HIP reduces to what about 800x600 or something.
My question asks should I bother reducing first or am I fine letting HIP do it for me because that would add to my Hard disk space filling up.

Just bought a second one because they stopped making them and I got the last one at the store (Best Buy),best camera I ever owned.

3700x2700 is big enough to print a photo that's life size. So I wouldn't even bother taking that high. 5 megapixels is more than you'll ever need.

HIP resizes all your pictures down. The only time I've recommended guys resizing first is when they take a ton of high resolution photos and don't have a lot of ram. As long as you have at least 2 gigs you should be fine. But feel free to try it first and see if it makes any difference in speed on your machine.

The higher res the better Dom.
But you are entitled to your opinion.
I do not print out photos.I use them in the report and High res is the best way to CYA.

The more pictures, video and res the better in all cases.A checklist is blind.
