TOPIC: Putting the new mobile version through its paces

Putting the new mobile version through its paces 11 years 1 month ago #54899

So I have now done several inspections on the most recent release of HIP mobile. Without a doubt the drop-down list and the photo summary are two of the best features. The photo summary has really helped with clients since before this feature I had to take pictures twice, once in HIP and once on the camera, in order to show my client anything they couldn't see for themselves.

I've come across several small blips as I've used it and thought I would post them here to see if there are fixes or if I am missing anything. If anyone else has experienced the same blips please speak up. I'm not sure if they are unique to an iPad mini or not. I figured Dom might have a couple of answers to these as well.
  • The spacing of the comments in each section(the actual white space between lines) is fixed now at what looks like three lines and so even with being able to set the number of lines visible the spacing never gets smaller. The number of comments visible on a pages is actually less and the scrolling is now even greater.

  • Photo summary  - the photos all first appear zoomed up to the extents of the sides of the photo. As I scroll through I have to zoom out every photo to actually view it.

  • Is there a way to access a photo and edit it's caption in a specific section after it is saved other then taking another photo? I don't see a way of going to the photo caption outside of taking a photo. When I want to insert a photo from the gallery I also don't have a way of getting to the photo page. Am I missing an obvious button somewhere?

  • Drop down lists do not allow a blank selection in the list. Once you have selected something out of the list you can never deselect and leave it blank. The only option is to select and delete the word and the two colons from the comment manually. This will reset the list.

  • If you zoom really far into a picture it will not zoom out again unless you wait about ten seconds. If hit the summary button to go back to the summary photo page before waiting for the zoom out to occur, the program will crash.  Not a big issue since the summary page can only be accessed from the section list where the program has already been automatically saved. I thought I would mention it as a warning to inspectors using the photo summary. If you zoom in on a photo and then try to zoom out, be patient and wait for it to respond otherwise you may crash the program.

  • The option to set the number of lines showing for comments ldoes not save after you close the program.

  • I mentioned this one in the other thread, but currently the drop-down lists are not working and leave the double arrows and the list title showing on the finished report.

I always feel bad when I'm mentioning issues like this because it sounds as though I'm complaining about the program. Nothing could be further from the truth. I figure it's better to deal with the glitches and improve the experience for everyone. Dom kicks some serious butt in how he programs this software. :)

Great feedback Cameron. That's what I call constructive criticism and I love it. It's what helps to make HIP so great! Looking over the list to get some more details:

1. I'm not exactly sure what you mean here. If you reduce the number of rows to 1 then each comment will only take up one row. If you set it to 3 it'll always take up the space of 3. We had to set the row height to be fixed (to whatever you choose) to keep the app from sucking up memory. This is one of the main reasons the app would get laggy before and doesn't now.

2. Never seen this before I'll definitely have to check it out.

3. Oops looks like there's a button missing. It's showing on Android but not iOS. Good catch!

4. You can add a blank comment to your actual list. Let me know if this works for you.

5. I see it sticking waiting to zoom out but can't get it to crash. Does it do this every time for you?

6. Already on the to-do list.

7. Already on the to-do list.

Okay, I understand number one now. I think it was the fact that it always takes up the space of whatever number of lines you choose that was throwing me off. All of my items in the report start with a list of single or two word conventions which I use to describe the overall condition of every item. I initially set it on three lines and then of course those lists of conventions and then material descriptions were taking a lot of scrolling to get through. I switched it to two lines and now it's much tighter spacing and less scrolling.

The photos appearing all zoomed in seems to be happening because the program is using the extents of the sides of the photo instead of the height of the photo. I use the program by holding the iPad mini in landscape mode. Perhaps it just needs to be able to adjust so that in landscape mode the height of the photo is used instead.

On the fourth item above, the problem I'm having is that I already have blank items in my lists and none of those blank items are showing up. Actually, everyone of my lists starts with a blank item.

Regarding the number five, the program crashing when I zoom into the window and then try to get out of the photo summary page, no, it doesn't happen every time. It only seems to happen if I zoom in, then attempt to zoom out a couple times, get impatient, and then hit the button to go back to the summary page. It's not really a glitch of any kind, I just think the program is trying to zoom out and I am stressing it by pushing buttons.

Hey Dom, one more thing I noticed on the photo summary. When I zoom into a photo, I can't move around. The photo is always locked at the center. This would be a nice change to have in the future.

The new beta desktop version is working perfect so far. I have already used the new feature by making corrections to list selections in the black/red panels. The lists are working perfect too. I downloaded my report yesterday and it literally took ten minutes to finish a couple details and have a finished report. Love it. :)
