TOPIC: Photo resolution in finished report

Re: Photo resolution in finished report 13 years 6 months ago #41129

Does the PDF increase the same as the size of one photo?  So if one photo is 22Kb right now and the 700 pixel wide is 187Kb, would the PDF increase in size similarly?  Or does the PDF size change using a different "set of principles"?

It'll increase by slightly more than the size of the photo. The actual photo is getting inserting into the PDF, then there's a few kb to handle how it's inserted.

Check out this pdf. I've improved the current way the system handles the default images and added 2 more settings.

The first image is the new default setting. File size 19k.
2nd image is the new low quality setting. File size is 6k.
The third image is the new high quality setting. File size is 31k.

Let me know what you think, especially of the difference between the first and 3rd image.

More files and tests coming soon.

The very first thing I noticed is the text is legible in the third photo on that tiny security system sign. Very nice. In the first photo, it looks like it says "BTUNXS", but your brain can still make it out just because of letter shape recognition. Both the first and third are more detailed, like the address numbers. I can read them clearly in both and the house details are better as well. I can still see the detail in the stucco in the first photo and it looks great in the third. There is also a clear improvement in the annotations, they are more crisp and less like a bitmap image.

Here's the kicker, all of the observations I just made were made by looking at the photos at 300%! I love it! And the file size shouldn't increase much at around 31K for the largest photos. I was desiring this from the standpoint of clients zooming in to see the details in the photos and this makes it happen. Bring on the photos of efflorescence and concrete spalling!  Clients will know what the photo is trying to show.

I would probably use the third setting as often as report size would allow, and then back down to the default if needed. But I can imagine for many guys putting a bunch of photos in every report or larger buildings which just need more photos, the lowest setting is still clear enough. I've been testing different colors of annotations, font types and sizes, I will post some of what I've figured out seems to work the best in the next day or two. There are definately certain combinations that work better than others.

Thanks Dom, will this come out with 3.0? I'm looking forward to it!

Yup, this is something I'm working on for 3.0 but will have some of you guys testing it sooner.

New feature (widely requested). The option for 3 across.
