TOPIC: Photo resolution in finished report

Re: Photo resolution in finished report 13 years 6 months ago #41115

That's what I figured but I wanted to confirm. It's not the quality that's the problem, it's the shrinking of the dimensions that becomes an issue. Only way to fix that is to take up more physical space on the report.

Yeah or add text on top in photo edit with over lay.
Picture support in Docs I guess is the only way though too bad it cant be done as a hyper link of some kind where you click and get the larger image.

I see why it is so hard to do all your updates.:)

Yes, I'm mostly referring to illustrations added using the HIP photo section, but the text and annotations do stand out too.

They seem to look more pixelated than the rest of the photos I'm inserting them on, even when I am zoomed out to 66% I can still see the pixelation of the annotations and text. I have also had more success picking a simple font like Arial and using a larger typeface(16 or 18 min.) for any text I insert. Pixelation and Serifs in a font do NOT go together well.  Most of this discussion has left me thinking there isn't much that could be done about text and annotations.  Not without greatly increasing the finished report size. Like you said Dom...

Annotations are especially difficult, especially text. Text does not scale well, up or down. You can make it look great at a single resolution/zoom. The problem is that if you make it look great at 200% it'll look bad at 100% and vice versa.

I've had similar problems trying to shrink graphics and still retain clear resolution, even with decent programs, when I produce marketing material.  Straight lines in bright red or yellow seem to look like bitmap graphics even in a jpeg where some amount of blending takes place.

The photos and annotations are obviously more crisp, but I figured the size puts them out of the running, doesn't it?  The 80% was 8-9 times the current size of photos in HIP wasn't it?  Regardless, I would love it if the annotations and text were that clear.

It is that much larger, but it's also 200% of the original dimensions, 700 pixels wide rather than 350. I've been playing with some numbers in between to see if I can find a few good values to create your 'low', 'medium' & 'high' settings.
