I would document that I could not find any return air duct, and that a licenced hvac person should come and further evaluate the situation.

Don't be surprized if they tell you it has a plenum return and it is underneath the unit.

What is the PVC?? pipe on the right?

Have a great day

Was there a vent on the left or right side of that closet wall and could it have had a filter?

Wish there was a better overall view.

I would like to say thanks every reply..
actually, the picture was tooken 6months ago for my appraisal work. I didn't do detailed unit test, but no space found for the filter and/or return air space. The Furnace seems ordinary unit for typical SFR.  So, I had a question that anyone seen Furnace unit without "return air". This is  reason that I post.
Anyone know Furnace unit can be operated without return air, I would like to get an information. - picture, web site, opinion, etc.. any advise, very appreciated.

I am sure it had a return.
You may have not seen one but it was there .

A furnace just can"t operate with no return.

It would create Carbon Monoxide.
