It might be set up on that stand to accommodate a return from below.  I don't see a condensate line, but this may not be a furnace/air conditioner combo.  I do see staining, so that is hard to tell.  The PVC on the right does not seem to be a condensate line.  There has to be a return somewhere.  It appears to be an older unit.

Taking the cover off you might be able to see where the filter is located and that would indicate the direction of the return.  (I say that knowing that this picture is 6 months old, but say I it for your future reference.)

A more descriptive photo would help the diagnosis!

I am sure it had a return.
You may have not seen one but it was there .

A furnace just can"t operate with no return.

It would create Carbon Monoxide.

I agree, The filter and return for this type of set up is usually at the bottom and the return grill or grills are on the lower wall to the left or right, and combustion air from either vents in the door or in this case from duct work coming from fresh air outside above the roof. The so called "PVC", looks to me like a metal duct supplying fresh air from above the roof. IMOA

Here is a similar system return grills are not in these pics but were there on both lower sides to the left and right walls one in the living room and the other in the bedroom, heater was in the hallway between the two rooms.

Here is another example which I called out from last month that shows a loose wood box with debris on it.

It is most likely drawing air in partially from the utility closet.
