TOPIC: forgotton questions

forgotton questions 14 years 1 month ago #36344

Things have been going well for some time and I forget to post questions as they come up.  I asked this already some time ago but I forgot the answer.  I eliminate the hzf files off my computer every so often so it is easier to find more recent reports. I save them on a thumdrive and via online storage.  I want to start putting them on my website but want to put them back into HIP to slightly modify some of the content before doing so.  How do I copy the hzf files back into HIP?  Also I want to plan ahead for when my computer needs replaced or it crashes.  Do I store the license on an external platform and just load it onto the new computer?  How do I load my version onto the new computer without losing several hundred hours of comment editing?  I think it would be the same answer that satisfies the first question but please let me know if it is different.

Thanks!

Hi Gary,

I strongly suggest getting carbonite.com for $5 a month and have it backup your files and Home Inspector Pro. It's easy and off site. Thumbdrives are not reliable for long terms storage.

You can open the inspections up by copying them into your C:\Program Files\Home Inspector Pro\Client Data folder. Also, instead of deleting them off your computer, create a 2010 folder with months inside and store the inspection in the month folder.

Yes, to install on a new computer, install HIP then load up your templates which are in the Data folder and copy your inspections in.

Thank you.  I have used carbonite since using your program but thought additional storage would be piece of mind.  Why are thumbdrives not reliable over the long term?  If thats the case I will probably just use online backup.

Thanks  :)

Because they fail. The solder points for the usb go bad and you have problems. There's no perfect media. CD's & DVD's were supposed to last 100 years. People are finding in normal conditions they degrade in a decade. That's why you need multiple backups.

Make sure carbonite is set to backup all the file types within HIP.

I strictly use the ctl2go with HIP for inspections.  I know that carbonite backs up everything on the harddrive.  Is there somethings else I need to direct carbonite to back up?  Also great point about the downfall of media storage.  Thanks
