If I did not hit save after editing a template is it lost for ever?

If you did the edit in a report and saved the report but not the template you can open the report and still save the template, otherwise its gone!

There is a temporary file in the template program file with a code in it, I am wandering if that was it and could be reinstated.

Just as John said. If you've saved the inspection, reopen it and save the template (the template at the moment in time the inspection is done is saved within the inspection file). Every inspection you should be saving inspection, template and of course the pdf when you generate the report.
