Russ,
It really depends on if they are required in your area or not.  It is a good idea to have them installed, and would be worth the mention.

It is almost a bigger requisite in your area with the warmer temperatures.  Nothing worse than leaving the hose in the kiddie pool or around the fruit trees and having it suck everything right back into the hose.  I always recommend as an upgrade.

There is nothing sweeter than the smell of fresh cut grass on a baseball infield, the click of a wooden bat and the taste of a hot dog at a warm sunny daytime double-header.

Thanks Rob, I understand about the area and it's requirements, and I'm glad to see you would recommend them, I was thinking more along the lines of a "safety and health" issue now, kind of, like what Stephen says in his comment. It could be confined to certain area's as well, I guess. I just don't hear much about them, (all though I got hammered by every building inspector in our area to have them installed before we could get a final), I understand the safety issue now, it could be a serious problem under the right circumstances, but at the time of a final that's the last thing you want to hear, plumber leaves them off and you have a dead line, it seems so minute compared to the closing of the house and in the mean time the interest rate is going up and you have a family wanting to move in, who needs them anyway, they just spray you in the face when you disconnect the water hose anyways right, well I'm on the other side of the fence now, looking at things a little different and that's good. Calling out  "safety or health" issue's, it's like the anti-tip devices for ranges, their so important.

man am I rambling or what, sorry.
this site is a good release, lol

My county requires them on new construction.  I took them off my house.  I hardly ever see them.  If they are not present I do not make a big deal of it.  They seem nannyish...

I think the requirement came about because of the pesticide, herbicide dealies people put on the end of their hoses that could theoretically get sucked into the house.  With interior water pressure in the line leading to the hose I have not had a county guy yet who could explain to me how such chemicals can get to my kitchen sink...

I have one on my car gas tank lid... works great!

Russ - your comment reminded me of that old Steve Martin bit called Ramblin' Man.  He had that arrow in his head and played the banjo and said/sang the same stuff over and over.  Very Steve Martin...
