What is the device that is on the copper pipe?

Is it for preventing from freezing?

Is there a spot to plug in a cable or extension cord to heat the pipe?

Here, turn it around both ways so we can see both sides...

If it's powered by 120, I would also think to prevent freezing. If it's low voltage it might be some type of aquastat. Where does the pipe go?

Yeah, maybe it is a magnet, I'm just trying to figure a magnet on a copper pipe. It also looks like one of thoses thingys they stick on your finger at the hospital.

The picture is dark, so it's hard to say.
