TOPIC: Washer drain pipe in main line

Hi HIPPIES,

Is anybody out there? I have an inspection to finish up tonight. I would like your opinions about this washer drain pipe. I feel its ok since it will be above the appliance or fixture it serves but I want to recommend a backflow valve in the main line. What say you?

This should have a stand pipe to prevent cross contamination.  It should be between 18-30" above the trap depending on your area.

Sorry Scott - didn't see this until now (post turkey, so my eyes are blurry, seeing double, that sort of thing...).  I think the entrance needs to be higher, ala John's comment, but I don't know why you have to worry about a back-flow device or cross contamination - it's DWV.  It is a direct line into the main drain.  The basement is below the drain level - is this going to a septic?  Could also be going to the street, but either way it is direct out to the end.

Thirty inches or so above the trap may make it pretty high up.  They might want to clip or clamp the washing machine drain to the pipe since they can't tie it to the service hoses. 

Also, the drain is directly above the outlet.  Since this is a dedicated outlet, or should be, you could recommend a GFI there or even a plastic cover like on an exterior outlet to protect it from water.

The standpipe is improperly installed. I would note in my report as a repair. I would note as The standpipe configuration and trap are improperly installed and recommend a plumber to evaluate and repair or replace as needed.

First the standpipe receptor minimum above the trap is 30-42 inches depending on IRC/UPC.

There are also other issues with this installation.
