TOPIC: HELP! IS THIS MOLD???????????????

Hi, I had a pipe burst in my unfinished basement about a month ago while I was out of town. The water leaked and stood for a good length of time, long enough to mold up some couches and other belongings that had to be thrown out. I was worried that there may be a mold infestation occurring, but when the renters association came out, they claimed that it was only mildew. They treated the "mildew" with a bleach solution about two weeks ago. Now, again, I am worried that the "mildew" might actually be mold.... Ive taken a couple of pictures, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Don't believe them when they say it is "only" mildew.  There is a bit of confusion about what mildew actually is.  Usually mould and mildew are used interchangeably but mildew only grows on living plants.  Sometimes mould that grows on fabric is called mildew.  They are all a type of fungi.Regardless of which "definition" you use, the stuff on your floor would not be mildew. 
That doesn't mean that the way it was cleaned up is not appropriate; you would have to go to an expert for that.  Some on this board may be experts.

If you think you have mold, or smell the presence of mold, then you probably have mold.  If you want to know for sure the spend your hard earned money and have it professionally tested. It will cost you around $200.00 BUT you have no other options. Unless you want the morons to come and spray more bleach water. What ever is behind the walls or growing in the wood will not be killed with bleach water.

BTW mold, mildew, its all fungal growth... Want to know for sure?? You have to test it, and not with a home depot do it yourself kit, but by someone who knows.

This house should have air testing done, to find out if it is the air and a mold inspection and swab or slides done, it could become a very serious problem and only  gets worce with time!! I do a large # of air tests in my area and if you smell it and under the situation described there is probably good deal of mold and if you see it there is usually 5 times that amount behind the walls

This appears to be a large area of mold growth due to the plumbing leaking and cleanup could not be done in 24-48 hours.

Looks to me that a remidiator is needed. HVAC system may also be affected as well.

After the cleanup is done then they should test to make sure the mold is gone.

There is visible mold/mildew/fungi.

Renters association is wrong in there recommendations.

Hire a professional mold specialist to proper clean up the basement and HVAC system.

I agree with Dave, you have mold and are at the point were mediation is required, contact a mold removal contractor have them start with the beginning AS and check it as it goes along
