There's a few different methods, but the one I see used the most is basically cotton swabs that you use to wipe down areas that wouldn't be cleaned. Normally this is under the kitchen sink and other out of reach areas. When meth is being cooked in a house the chemicals get everywhere. Then you send in the swabs to a lab and they send you back the results. There is a meth detection device that I saw recently that tests for meth directly and the chemicals used to make it but it's quite expensive.

Any one interested in finding out about a test procedure  could look at: www.mistralgroup.com   they have a test where the swipe and aerosol test is fairly easy.  The problem come in being certain of the results.  When you do the test you have to be certain if you are going to say that there was some use in the house or not and that you can back it up with good proof.  If you can't be sure, you could end up in a lawsuit and end up loosing a good referral source (the Realtor).  So you have to ask yourself is it worth it?  One thing I am doing is to control the expectations of the client.  Because the test is not conclusive that has to be disclosed so why do the test?

Hence Russ's comment. It's best to take the sample and send it to a lab for 3rd party testing. That way it's on them and you charge extra for taking the test.

I disclaim all drugs or chemicals on my agreement.  Here you would need a special, different license to perform such inspections.  It opens a can of worms if you are not familiar with ALL protocols in collection and sampling.  If done improperly you would get chewed up in court for many reasons, particularly by the lawyer of the seller of the property.  Your E&O might not cover you either - you should check that out.
