TOPIC: What In the World is This!?

What In the World is This!? 16 years 2 weeks ago #4188

Ran across another interesting one...

You know, the typical foreclosed house in Northern Virginia, previously populated by who knows how many illegal families.  Usual layout - 8 bedrooms (some as large as 7'x6'!), laundry room converted into somewhat of a bathroom (complete with leaking around the base of a raised shower - I have to wonder if the shower merely drains into a hole in the slab beneath...), microwave inside a kitchen cabinet (with the backside protruding into the dining room and plugged into a dining room outlet with an extension cord...), an AC unit in the attic, on its side so the condensate doesn't drain properly, (the bedroom closet below and two of the "bedrooms" below are infested with many colorful molds - likely irretrievably), electrical throughout the house you would not believe -- well, as I said, the usual layout.

One of the "bedrooms" had a private entrance.  It used to be the basement entrance, with a small 12"x18" window and laundry room.  Not a big space - the usual "mud room" size - 5'x9' - but now apparently it's a private room, with the door closed off to the rest of the house.  The room probably brought in big rent.

The foundation is concrete block.  Concrete block is not very insulative - even a Nicaraguan knows that.  So, let's see, what can we put on it to make give it more insulation?  Oh, and maybe a little sound proofing for the ceiling.  I know, this stuff!  And yes, it was inside the panel box, despite the wonderful drywall job to finish off the wall.

I have NO idea, and I mean NO idea what it is.  It appears to be some form of cellulose given integrity with a slightly sticky substance, but when you pick it apart it doesn't act like cellulose.  The color is as you see.  There was only one clue what it is*.  Anyone want to guess the R-value?  Say, I'll bet it's GREEN!!

You all have to understand how fed up I am with this S&%#!  I see it every day.  Some poor person is going to buy this house and have to spend tens of thousands to bring it back into an American, livable, mostly code-complying condition.  There are literally thousands of such houses abandoned in my county, Prince William County, Virginia.  These people have been a tragedy beyond belief...

* Tastes like the filling of a chicken burrito.

Oh hey that looks like the old spray in insulation they use in metal auto mechanic shops around here.  That stuff works wonders, for your color scheme, but does nothing for your heat and cold problems.  lol

Did you all notice the Federal Pacific Stab-lok box?  Yep, aluminum wiring, onto which Paco wired many things with copper.  Yet the house survives?

Is there a way to find out how many homes sold in a month in the area you live in? The reason I ask is because I would like to know what the growth of the business could be.
