TOPIC: Another Dangerous Dryer Vent

Another Dangerous Dryer Vent 13 years 10 months ago #33723

I have posted and I often see posts about dangerously-clogged dryer vents.  Maybe one day people will understand how important keeping a dryer vent clean really is!

More and more I am seeing another kind of dangerous dryer vent.  One that will be hard to get to for cleaning, either from inside or out.

Often builders are more and more in the habit of terminating a dryer vent either very high, 30' or so, on the exterior wall, or through the roof!  And I'm not sure why.

Certainly two things spring to my thinking:

1.  Out of sight, out of mind.  When I see this I am careful to point it out to my prospective buyer clients.  They need to have this brought up.  The dryer vent is NOT something you want to forget about. and

2.  Either a professional, fearless youth and/or a really tall ladder will be needed in the near future!

This is another potential danger.

When the house is completed and drywalled, this dryer termination will not only be high on the exterior wall, but will be VERY DIFFICULT to get to from the inside.

And somehow during the construction process the installation has come apart.  Left this way will result in clogging on the inside as lint escapes everywhere but outdoors.

This photo necessitated a climb and a long reach.

This location will be very hard to get to after drywall.

It has to be secured very, very well or sooner or later, apparently, it might come apart when it shouldn't!

To me this represents a real DANGER!  It is an uncaring installation, in the least.

My recommendation:  on a pre-drywall walk through, check to see where and how the dryer vent is terminated.  Getting to it in the future is something that needs to be thought about now.
