Isn't it interesting the the DOE is saying that manufacturers set them to 140? Sounds like a dangerous piece of misinformation.

I had purchased a water heater, guarantee for life, from Lowe's. The water was very hot, after checking the thermostat reading, I found out that the temperature rating was factory set between 145 and 150. After tuning it down to 120. It is alot more comfortable taking a shower, needless to say that it helped my electric bill. This is one question that I remember on the NHIE. That's why I had asked at the begining of the thread. Thanks for the responses.

Did some poking around online and found that most manufacturers do in fact set them to 140. The reason for this is for the dishwasher. Now, most dishwashers now a days have the built in heat unit, just like most newer washing machines. So, this being set at 140 for the dishwasher and washing machine is really useless, costs more money, and may cause scalding.f Most of the info that I did come across suggested 120-125. Now we know, the dishwasher is the main reason for manufacturers setting the temp at 140. Hope this helps.
