TOPIC: Kewanee Boiler

Kewanee Boiler 13 years 5 months ago #42707

Found this dinosaur today... :o...anyone have info on how to age this thing?  My thought is it's original (home built in 1930).

A company named Burnham bought out Kewanee in 2002 I think, so you might be able to get records from them.  Most likely you are looking at the original boiler there.  Kewanee is right near my neck of the woods.  They built those type R boilers right around that time, though that is a pretty small one in comparison to what I've seen before. Yours looks like it has limped along for a lot of years when it should have been put out to pasture.

That's pretty much what I found for info too.  I shot them an email, but need to get the report out this morning.  I'll have to send a follow up email if they know more about it.  The thing ran, but it certainly wasn't very efficient...;)

By the looks of the boiler it was probably built around 1928. At least some of the boiler was built then. This is a steel constructed boiler and it is amazing that it has lasted this long. Generally, cast iron boilers used for hot water heating has a life span of approximately 50 years because cast iron doesn't deteriorate as fast as steel. It also appears that this boiler has already been leaking.
