TOPIC: Wood fired furnace

I inspected a wood furnace that didn't have a control for combustion air inlet nor did it have a damper. (At least I couldn't find it.)  It did have two openings that appeared to go into the upper part of the heat exchanger.  These openings had a cover on them that could be fastened with a set screw or sorts.  For this picture I removed on of them.
Have any of you seen something like this before?

Looks pretty primitive from that pic Bert. Was it homemade? The closest I get to wood burning is when I run into an outdoor wood burner. Nothing like that though.

I considered that but the convoluted heat exchanger made me thing that it might be a factory made thing.  Possibly someone used a heat exchanger and build a furnace around it.  The whole thing was caked with creosote.  The owner said he runs it with the door open until the fire is hot and the creosote burned out, then he closes the door and it smolders from then on.  Not good.

Was there no manufacturer name anywhere on it?

No name, no data plate with clearances, no nothing. 

I have seen posts about those but have never seen one live and in person.  I see a lot of wood stoves.  If a wood stove does not have a UL listing (you probably don't have those in Canada) I note it on the report.

Those look like they create a lot of creosote.  I imagine they have to be cleaned often.  That shiny stuff inside the chamber isn't good - that looks like creosote. 

If it needed dampers or openings I wouldn't even know what to look for.  It does look a bit primitive, but all it has to do is distribute heat and get rid of smoke.  Sorry I'm not much help here!
