TOPIC: selection and damage boxes

I have noticed that when clicking to select a different damage or selection box/panel, I go to click under the selections in the empty space, to find out the the entire space below the last option selects that last option. Not sure if I explained that clearly. Is there any way to let this space be blank, so I don't select things accidentally all the time when I'm just trying to 'select' the panel? It seems to work counter to what I am used to on say, browser windows.

Would appreciate any insights.
