TOPIC: Work independent, or for someone?

Work independent, or for someone? 11 years 9 months ago #51819

Hello everyone,

I am taking a course for Home Inspection. I am wondering, when I am done with my course, and have certificate in hand, should I work for someone, or should I start my own business? I understand the pros and cons, but I figure I'd ask those who have done this a while and get a feel from your experiences. I have been told it is very difficult to go out on your own, with very limited contacts, and be successful. I also know the tools can get costly as well. I actually plan on buying the necessary tools I don't already have while taking my course. I just want some opinions from those who know. I look forward too all responses.

                                                                      Sincerely,
                                                                Wesley Reynolds

It's always best to start for someone else in the beginning to learn the ropes. Then you can branch out later. Let us know where you're located, I might know someone!

No one in that area that I can think of off hand. The most important thing when starting off is to have money saved up or another job that you're doing. It does take at least a year to get ramped up to the point that you're making enough income to actually live on. Of course there's a lot of variables with that too.

No worries, I am working full time now. my thoughts were to continue doing what I'm doing, taking the time off needed to do inspections. My present employer knows my intentions as well.

I am curious though, once I get certified through school, am I still required to take the ASHI exam and the code of ethics exam? I was on the ASHI website reading a little, and it lead me to believe that is what I need to do.

If you want to become an ASHI member, yes you do. Same goes for InterNACHI or any other association. They all have their own criteria to join.
