TOPIC: Pickens Plan

Re: Pickens Plan 16 years 3 months ago #2481

I agree with damn near everything you said.  I believe in free market.  I’ve heard Alexander Tyler’s sayings on Democracy.  And I agree that the “green idea” is a little farfetched at times.  I also agree that this will benefit T. Boone VERY much.

My deal is this; at least it’s an idea, that doesn’t create pollution when used.  I like this idea more than I like the idea of putting ethanol in gas (which gets worse gas mileage than plain gas, thus we must purchase more).  In my mind, it’s the lesser of two evils.

I like the idea of solar too.  I know the technology is still lacking in both area.  I know that if you don’t use a technology, you’re not going to advance it.  I also know that in order to get something done, there must be monetary incentive to do it.  Not everyone does stuff for the benefit; most do stuff, for what they can get out of it!  Utopian societies just don’t exist.  We must make the horrible sacrifices of ‘giving a little’ on our beliefs in order to live day to day.

On a side note, I thought of an idea to create electricity at every home using excising utilities and no pollution from its use.  I don’t know if it would work for sure, but it was a good idea.  Problem is, I know it would be an uphill battle to try and tap into the utility even if it did work.

So, if anyone has plenty of money to spare on a crazy idea that may not make it.  Come talk to me!  lol

Right on hombre!

Ethanol is stupidity.  It takes two gallons of gasoline and thousands of gallons of clean water to bring one gallon of ethanol to market.  Not to mention the damage it does to cars and the inflation it has created worldwide as resources are diverted by law toward inefficient use.  As a policy it is idiocy.

Windmills have been around for decades - highly subsidized.  The mills now provide less than 1% of electrical use nationwide.  They are not clean, using diesel turbines to buttress them when they don't work, which is about 90% of the time.  Their carbon discharge is greater than their carbon savings.  If something cannot survive in the market without government subsidy (that means you and me) it should not be allowed to survive in the market until it can make it on its own.  Government intervention to prop it up helps nobody.

Solar is cool, if it worked.  At present it uses only a couple of light wavelengths.  It is very inefficient, supremely costly, and the panels do not last long.  The system  wears out long before any break even could possibly be achieved.  It too has been around for decades, only because of government subsidy.  I see unused solar panels on houses all the time!  I have not seen a working system in many years.  My understanding from home owners who have the panels on their roofs (typically two panels that are something like 3'x8') say that they never worked well and only provided about 5% of the water heater's needs.  That is not very efficient given the costs.  At my house, that would be $1.07 savings each month.  Great!

So what would bring these and other alternatives to market?  The market!  There is NO government legislation that will bring forth new technology or cost-effective energy producers.  The only thing that brings such forth is the invisible hand.  Period.  The more the government tries to force the issue with legislation and regulation the longer it will take for the market to be able to bring alternatives to bear.

Government will exacerbate the energy problem (similar to how it has been) just like it exacerbated the economic downturn of the 30's and turned it into a depression.  Yes, all those "programs" to fix the economy made it worse and longer lasting.  WWII did NOT bring us out of the depression...

I'd love to hear your idea to bring power to homes using existing utilities.  Sounds cool to me!  Don't discount your abilities to bring on an idea that works - that is what the patent office is for.  Remember, Philo T. Farnsworth invented the television in his basement and filed the patent literally minutes before a Russian did - he was IN Russia!  Philo's company, Philco, changed the world.  Don't stifle your own ideas!

Keep talking John!  I think I scared off everyone else....
