I have no concern with the panel being old or being for fuses. I do have a concern with double tapping, especially an Aluminum and a Copper together. Considering the problems with maintaining tight connections with Aluminum, I wouldn't want to make matters worse by double tapping. I pointed out to my client that the double tap on the fuse holder was a safety issue. The double tap on the neutral bus is as well but to a lesser degree. The fact that the connection was loose does make me wonder though. I have seen charred neutrals. See the picture below. The ground wire on the neutral bus is not that serious maybe but I have no idea why they would have done that. Lots of room on the ground bus bar.

I agree Bert, failed to see that the wires were alluminum. Could not see the wire behind the double tap.
I do know that they make neutral bus bars with screws that are designed to take more than one neutral wire. I have heard so many electricians tell me that a double tap on a neutral bar is not a problem, that I fail to believe anything anymore. I do agree on copper and allum. though. I would still just recommend an electrician to repair anyways. I don't loose to much sleep trying to figure it out. Let the experts fix it. Recognizing the defect is our job, fixing it is the licensed expert job . Nice pics. I can't find the right setting on my camera to take nice pictures like that. |

After seeing the pics you made the right call. This panel and wiring needs attention ASAP!! That discoloration is very concerning. I think you client is entitled to a $250 refund. |

Never come across alluminum wire, so looking at pictures always assume regular wiring.
I guess alluminum never made it up here. ;D Good job Bert. |

I have not seen any solid conductor aluminum wiring in my area. But I do see multiple neutrals connected at a single lug and every once and awhile the discoloration like the ones pictured. Here is a nice illustration. |

Thanks Dave, good illustration. But why is it okay for alluminum and not for Copper. /
