TOPIC: Time Out For A Recital

Time Out For A Recital 14 years 5 months ago #32998

I had to get home quickly after my last inspection.  Sometimes work can get in the way of family things.  This thing was important, and I was able to get there just in time!

The last of the Markanich-ans* had a piano recital.  She was to play Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake," and Handel's "Messiah, Hallelujah Chorus."

She did great!  Both pieces, no perceptible mistakes!  In fact, of the 13 performers there, she won the coveted chocolate piano prize for her performance.  We brought the chocolate piano home, put it on our real piano, and it lasted until just after this photo!

Then it was off to a nice family dinner at a fine local restaurant.  We had reservations AT the restaurant, but not any ABOUT the restaurant.  It was a terrific, leisurely family evening.

*The "ich" in our name is pronounced "k."

Awesome Jay, sounds like you had a great time.

About your last name, I forget if I've asked you this before. Which slavic country is your family from (at least your dad's side)?

My grandparents came from Hungary in 1893.  They came from a city that no longer exists.  The "ics" is Hungarian for "ch," as in chilly.  In those days, the Franz Joseph era, the country boundaries changed all the time.  So I don't know where they came from in terms of today's map.

Yeah that could have easily been part of Yugoslavia as well at some point. My Grandparents brought my dad and his brothers from what is from what's now Croatia (we still have a home there) over here after a 5 year wait in Italy for their papers. A lot of people on Ellis Island had the ic changed to ich to fit into the American pronunciation but my grandfather wouldn't hear of it.

Yes, Ellis Island changed a lot of names.  The family grave stones in Scranton PA still say "ics."

I have had people on inspections tell me I am Hungarian, Polish, Czech, Croate, Serb, Slav and Russian.
