TOPIC: PayPal rip off

Re: PayPal rip off 15 years 4 months ago #16398

A lot of the guys right now enjoy the extra methods of taking it over the phone or on site. Here in California almost everyone is computer savvy, but it's not that way in the rest of the country.

What do you do right now when you get the 60 or 70 year old couple who can't pay over their cell? You could go with pulling out your laptop, but at that point they are entering the information into your computer and you will technically need to be PCI Compliant. If you're computer had any sort of key logging software on it then it would be collecting your clients credit card info and sending it out to a hacker in cyberspace. At that point, it's treated the same as you entering in the information on your own.

I spoke with PayPal today.  Yes, you and I are good to go.  As long as your not using a physical or virtual terminal and not handling the clients account information your good.  I also asked about a client using my laptop to access the the paypal "Buy Now" system.  They said it's not a problem either.  They have no plans to add additional service charges to the standard paypal payment system that I'm using.

If your using this group of services, which you no doubt are, you're set...

"PayPal adheres to international PCI (payment card industry) compliance standards for data security.† With Website Payments Standard, Email Payments, and Payflow Link*, PayPal handles the payment card information for you. So you don’t have to worry about your buyers’ payment card security or about compliance with PCI DSS for your business.††"

The guy who told you about a client using your laptop to enter data is not correct. Any data passing through your computer forces you to have to be PCI compliant. I've talked to Visa and Mastercard directly on this (they're the ones forcing compliance) as I'm working on a way around it for our users. I have no doubt paypal will look the other way though in that scenario they have no way to know it's someone on your computer versus on their own computer.
