TOPIC: Outlets under sink mounted facing up.

Re: Outlets under sink mounted facing up. 16 years 2 months ago #3453

In Virginia, under-sink mountings need to be at least 6" high and secured to the cabinet or wall.  At least they separated the dishwasher and disposal!

Also, here cables are not allowed to pass through surfaces, or walls, or cabinets to plug into an outlet somewhere else...

I've seen it a lot here. Why would that not be allowed? They'd rather you run an electrical outlet and have it directly under the sink?

Horizontal receptacle installations have been forbidden by the NEC since 1993 and need to be replaced with boxes on vertical surfaces; 1996 NEC extends this requirement to bathroom counters and cabinets; 1999 NEC to wet bar counters and cabinets; 2002 NEC to all counters.

NEC similarly prohibits extension cords from passing through partitions, ceilings, walls, floors, under carpets, etc.

Also, the cables in Scott's photo should be secured to the plumbing drain within 12" of the appliance, and not squiggled all around as in that picture.

The boxes need to be re mounted on the side as to prevent shock from dripping water
DW hose enter from lower cabinet which would indicate posible missing loop to prevent back water flow.
