any tips or tricks to share?

From what I've observed, people enter in Client Info when in laptop mode and any really long new narratives.

While in laptop mode they tap on all the materials and most of the observations. If it's a new narrative you can use the handwriting feature to add in the new comment or even the virtual keyboard.

I guess that while in tablet you could enter a short comment referring to a larger detailed narrative to add later.  That is to save time. 

You could do that as well. But all your materials should be input as they will already be in there or will be short. Once you get better at writing on the screen you can write longer narratives. I've bee on plenty of ride alongs where guys finish the whole inspection on site (though your much older homes, and basements make that a bit harder).

We enter the majority of the house and client data before we take the tablet out in the field.  You can then enter basic information during the inspeciton and then the bigger details back at the office.  It is diffinately a great way to do your work.  Just have to get used to it. 

To distracting
If you spend 20 min on the computer your physical inspection is 20 min longer..

I tried it with my netbook again but after first kitchen comments found myself to wrapped up in running around to waste time being a computer geek in the field.

Point and shoot followed by home report is best for me.

Simply noting materials on site is not a great help as picture commentary is what takes most of my time and that is not done on site
