All thank you for your time in verifying that this feature does not currently exist in HIP. How this this thread now move from a verification state to a new feature discussion?

Hi Scott, The developer(s) monitor the threads very closely, in fact I'm surprised Dominic hasn't chimed in already. They maintain an ongoing list of feature requests and work them in as they can. I imagine that they prioritize based on demand/support for specific features. In regards to your question one thing that I would like to comment on is that in HIP even though you can have multiple colors in the summary and you can define those colors as you wish they do not get organized by color in the summary (as far as I know this isn't an option currently). Currently the report summary is organized by page number and item number only, so you would have your minor concerns or suggestions mixed in with major concerns or defects for example rather than having a group of low priority comments then a group of high priority comments. Depending on how you look at it I suppose this has it's benefits, but personally I think I'd like to be able to have two separate lists or at least that option. For this reason I'm with you, having the option to have a couple of summary sections would be cool such as a; "Minor Concerns and/or Suggestions" summary and a "Major Concerns" summary, especially if you could view both together in the summary portion of the mobile apps. Another options that would work similarly is just to have the summary sort first by color then by page and item number, but again, having both together and grouped by item may be preferred by some. I tend to mark most everything as "major" while onsite, so that I can quickly view them in the summary portion of the mobile app as I do a walk-around with the Client, but then I go back and change them so that the summary section doesn't contain suggestions and/or what I call 'punch-list' items that the Client may want to be aware of upon move-in, but that are not necessarily bargaining/negotiating material that might get shared with others. If you're not familiar with HIP and/or Dominic I must say that above all the HIP Team is extremely responsive and it is very apparent that continuous improvement is a priority. I've received quick responses at all hours of the day and night and over the past couple of years of using HIP I've seen a lot of features be added and improvements made. It is already a great desktop software package and the mobile apps are very nice as well. That said I'm excited to see where it goes in time and as they continue to improve it. My two bits... Cheers. |

This is something we've gone back and forth on for a few times and why we added in the advanced color feature to allow you to color code items as different summary categories (as others have mentioned here). The biggest issue I've heard about when talking to inspectors that previously split up categories of summary items is that it makes a longer summary and causes clients to have to look through multiple pages to find issues about one area of the house/system. Having everything combined, yet still separated allows clients to find everything in one area easily.
Check out Serge's sample here: www.homeinspectorpro.com/dmdocuments/NOVASample.pdf to see how he tags different comments as Safety Concerns, Maintenance, etc. Color coding could be added to this as well, see That all being said, separated summary isn't off the table. It is on the to-do list but we need to see more interest before spending a few hundred hours coding it. We have a few hundred items on that list right now that we have to prioritize and get done!

Gotcha - yeah there are a few ways to look at this and they all have merit, its a tough call and we can't satisfy every Client's preference. In the interim a well written summary intro would probably do the trick.

Wow over 600 views!!! I know I started this topic needing one additional category for the summary section. Since then we have had request from multiple offices asking now for a maintenance section. I looked around and looks like Home Hub Zone has something like this already. Any news if HIP will be looking to implement something similar?

Hi Scott,
Many inspectors add maintenance comments in green so that they stand out in the report or in the summary as maintenance comments. We have added a sorted advanced color to the todo list but there's no timeline on it yet. We currently have well over a hundred items on the todo list and we increase priority based on inspectors requests. HIP 5 about to come out has tackled a ton of them though. Home Hub Zone is missing a ton of features that HIP has and doesn't come close to what we can do. I'm sure with almost any feature you can think of there's some program out there that can do it but none of them come as close to doing everything as Home Inspector Pro does while still being easy to use and creating good looking reports. |
