TOPIC: rel=?author?

How do I get the code into the head part of my site to implement author recognition for Google? Many sources say this is important to get blog posts to rank higher and for SEO in general. Instructions say to include this code: <a rel=?author? href=? plus.google.com/PUT YOUR GOOGLE ID HERE?/>
Also, I've been asked to write for a national trade magazine, I'd like to make sure the Google bot knows it's me.
