TOPIC: Looking for a very detailed inspection template

Re: Looking for a very detailed inspection template 10 years 4 weeks ago #59371

When in doubt, write your own template.  I have never understood the sharing of templates.  I have probably 200+ hours of writing and arranging my template to meet my needs and not that of someone else. Why would I want to share that valuable information and work product only to have it shared over and over again, possibly to someone in my own area?  When you write a template yourself, it can be written "how you inspect" and you can put in everything that is specific to your area.  If you live in Arizona, no sense in having "boiler" information and language taking up space in your template.  You never get bogged down tabbing through information that may only show up in 1 out of 2000 inspections.

Coke doesn't share it's recipe with Pepsi.
McDonalds doesn't share it's "secret sauce" recipe with Wendy's or Burger King.
Ford doesn't share it's designs with Chevy.
Architects don't share their designs, they sell them.

Wording in your reports should be your own.  It corresponds with how you discuss things with your clients.  It takes care of regional dialects and language differences.  i.e.  "Critters".  I would never use the word in my report.  Yet it is commonly used in other areas of the country.

This isn't aimed at anybody specific.  I value my time.  I try to keep my hourly rate around $150.  I don't treat my working time any different whether it is inspecting or writing language for the business.  200+ hours at $150 an hour......  I am sure you can see my point.  While we all try to help other inspectors with an item here or there, the blanket sharing of templates, language and information can let the untrained seem as though they know what the are doing when in fact, they do not.  It dilutes the industry.

Blame my rant of the day on 9 days of extreme back pain and meds.  Hopefully I can get back to work next week..  Best to all.

Thanks Stephen!  I couldn't agree with you more.  I just wanted something to start from.  I needed to use HIP on site to get a feel for how it works. Now its time to start modifying! ;D

There's over 2 dozen templates here shared on the forums Kevin, did you take a look at them all?

Sounds like you also need a 1 on 1. *8 hours s definitely tooooo long. Even Stephen has most of his inspection done on site now :D
