TOPIC: Ridge beam and collar ties.

I recently did an inspection, and found a few odd things. The first thing I noticed was the lack of collar ties on the last 8 or so rafters, what made it strange was there was a collar tie every four foot like there is supposed to be but none on the last 8 rafters.

There was also a ridge beam size change on the far 3rd of the main roof.

I also noticed at thet far 3rd the rafters changed sizes.

The gabels had a couple of 2x4 scabbed together.

And the sheetings direction of streangth stamp was ran perpendicular with the framing.

I personally have never seen so many changes in the rafter sizes, I have also never seen the ridge beam size change 2/3 down the ridge, and I thought collar ties are required every 4 feet.

Wow that's some really bad work there! It looks like a rather new, how old is the house? Did they put a new roof on?

The house is 5 years old. The sad thing is they did an great job on the rest ofthe house. They must have figured they can do what they want in the attic space because no one really goes up there.

I forgot there are several rafters pulling, well it looks like their pulling away from the ridge.

Yikes! Those gaps don't look good!
