OK. So 2 sets of stairs. I still don't like the idea of carpeting over an open riser. Maybe I'm too picky, but I think it should have just been covered with wood and then carpeted. Thanks for the clarification David. BTW David, my wife is infatuated with that show, and I can not stand it. I think he goes over the top, and viewers expectations can be a little high as to what we actually do sometimes. But at least it plants the seed to get a home inspection, right?

Did you or your wife see the 2 part show after it was inspected by a home inspector.
It was the first one I watched. I really like it. |

I tend to ignore the show and go in the other room, my wife sits there and tells me how great he is. So marry the guy I think. No, I have watched a few full episodes, and it's ok, but what gets me is when he starts going way beyond our scope and then proclaims that the inspector should have discovered such and such.

I agree. It is amazing the things that can be found if carpets get ripped up and holes cut in drywall.
I watch very little TV so I haven't seen his show very often. I saw a part of one episode which kind of got to me; He was declaring how something had been done incorrectly (he was right) so he was explaining what he would rip out and replace. Then he looked up and said; "The eave trough goes...I don't like it." Well...Mike doesn't like it does he? Well, then we will just have to rip it off. |

The stairs are hazards regardless of the code or building practices at the time the house was built. One of the purposes of a home inspector is to point out safety hazards to their clients.
The stairs are unsafe. Open risers, narrow treads, too steep, etc. The safety hazard cannot read the code or the calendar. People will get injured. Comment that the stairs are safety hazards and decribe the specific safety concerns. It is up to the client to decide if they want to have the problems fixed. Don't worry about when or which code made the stairs "offically" unsafe. They have always been unsafe. Yes, I would report those stairs in my report. |
