TOPIC: How is this for a townhouse firewall....

How is this for a townhouse firewall.... 15 years 6 months ago #12526

These are photo's of an attic firewall in a two year old Townhouse. Don't know how this passed inspection? Must be in invisible barrier.

In short? I would say it is not acceptable, due to the fact that it has been compromised.

Maybe when they finish the sheetrock, smoke tape it, stagger the butt seams a minimum of 32" (USG Handbook 2007) it will be a fine firewall. No Wait! I need to check but I do not think you are allowed to railroad drywall on a fire rated partition. That may depend upon rating, 30, 45, 60, 120 min. How many dwelling units are separated by this wall? If the wall is merely a draftstop partition (non rated) believe it or not it may be OK! Terrible workmanship, but ok.  ???

They are basically duplexes. I have inspected 5 of these over the last few years, all the others were done properly.(sealed, offset, etc.)

the house I inspected the other day seems to have been over looked for thr firewall, guess the boarders were in a hurry and skipped it, they did the house on the left and the second on the right but missed one.

feel sorry for them now bringing the strips up in 12 inch  sections to complete the fire wall
