In the interesting crawl space I beamed into I discovered another frightening thing, to me anyway. This crawl space was not secure! One side had a small door secured with a stick and the other had no door but was bricked over. That bricked access is visible in Beam Me Down, Scottie. While crawl spaces can be made secure, this one obviously has not been for some time.
This is typical of many crawl spaces, where an old stair case door has been walled over in favor of the small outside accesses. And while that stair case is in itself insecure, that is not what bothered me. I was bothered when I approached the stairs and looked up! That is access directly to the attic! With a home-made ladder on the left side! Come on in! That is a bad-guy invitation! You can lock your doors and windows and leave for work (or go to bed) and someone finding his way under your house can get into the attic and from there into the house itself! Not smart, especially if you value your life! My recommendation: When you have a crawl space, also have it inspected! There may be access from there into the house proper and you might have never known. A friend of mine is a detective on the DC police force who tells me that burglars know more about your house than you do. I trust that he is correct! |

Why would someone have access to their attic from their crawl space! That's a new one for me. Is there a reason for this?

Must be, but I have never seen it before. There was access from inside the house also, which is why it is such a security problem. There was power in the crawl space so with a power saw anyone could get into the house from there also.
