TOPIC: moisture meter: suggestions in using it

moisture meter: suggestions in using it 14 years 7 months ago #31029

I just got a Tramex Moisture Encounter Plus.  Wondering if anyone has any suggestions about using it.  For example do you use it on all surfaces you check or just occasionally?  Every time it goes to the "red" level do you note that?  etc.... Any suggestions would be great.

Doug, I use mine on every inspection. I use it in all kitchens and bathrooms around sinks, toilets, shower stalls, tubs. In the attic, I look for visible staining and then measure, and I also visualize what the roof looked like and scan any suspect areas even if they appear dry. I usually take a pic of the meter showing the measurement. For example, let's say the floor around a toilet is showing between 20 and 30% moisture all the way around it. I will find a reading around or close to the middle of that and photograph that spot and the meter reading. If I am working around an area like this and it comes up dry, I will also document that. I don't usually include these photos in the report, but I have them if I ever need them on a call back or complaint. Just my way of doing things, and I'm sure others will have different ideas for you.

Good point.  I like the idea of taking a picture of two places to make a compairison.

About the same as Ian.  I also check the bottoms of all the interior windows just to make sure they aren't leaky or something.  I'd rather spend the extra few minutes than be sorry.

I do the same as Ian and Harry, another spot I find a lot is the other side of tiled shower wall. Have found water leaking through into the closet several times.
