I think Mike's right on the left diagram.  It is that or maybe some form of arachnid or tick.  It does look a lot like a chigger, blown up real big.    (;>)  Scoutmasters see those things all the time...

The screening inside a chimney flue would be a problem.  Sounds like a homeowner installation.  Such screening should only exist at the top of the flue, and be removable so a sweep can clean the flues.  Installing screens inside the flue like that can cause mortar deterioration and/or spalling.  Was the question about the appropriateness of the screens being present?

Covers at the top keep out moisture as well, which is THE killer of chimneys.  Was that on there too?
