TOPIC: HVAC equipment in attic

I know that the 2009 IRC has specific requirements for work platforms and walkways to allow for easy access to HVAC equipment located in attics. Does anybody know when this first became part of the code?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I've had questions similar on other topics.  I have a couple of comments...

First don't forget that the IRC is an "International Residential Code and that most jurisdictions use it as a model to develop their own state, county, or city code.  That said I recommend referencing the code that is applies to the home rather than the international code.  With that said my second comment and suggestion is to contact your local building codes division and obtain contact information for the specialist in each code (plumbing, electrical, etc.) then route these historical type questions to them.  I've found that often times they don't even know when a specific code requirement was first published.
