Wasn't sure where to put this one.
I have never seen this set up before. I ran into a gas hot water heater. The home also had an indoor wood burner installed in the basement. The wood burner went right into the metal chimney. My question is this, is it ok for the gas water heater to also be exhausting into the same flue? |

Ian, I think it is ok. Very similar to a water heater venting into the chimney of a gas furnace.

Consulted with some heating and plumbing guys on this. It is NOT Ok. The water heater cannot be vented into the flue with the wood burner.

Ian, they have a couple of issues going on here,
The use of dissimilar materials is never recommended The gas vent should terminate either into a approved flue or the atmosphere in a approved manner The gas flue appears to have negative pitch on it What is that hanging in front of the stove vent, it probably is combustionable and may be too close (there should be a data plate on the stove) Have a great day Tim |

What is the reason Ian? Is it different than the water heater venting into the flue of a gas furnace? |

Michael, what you should see is the gas furnace vent connecting to the vertical flue with the water heater connecting to the vertical flue with the smaller vent located above the larger, they should not be tied together, unless the manufacturers installation directions say otherwise Have a great day Tim |
