try msft resizer to reduce image size.
I usually take photos at 3 mb then resize to small.

when batch adding photos, I choose to add the blank file next to each picture so I could add a diagram if I wanted. I then made some notes in the report and came to a stop. Saved the report. Opened the report a couple of hours later, and the blank "spaces" next to each picture were no longer there. Did I do something wrong or is this the way it is?

That's on purpose. If you exit HIP and go back in it shifts all the photos up. The assumption is that you deleted some (even though it's not necessary) and so it's cleaning up and tabs for you.

Yes, I did delete some pictures before saving and exiting. (blurry, duplicates, etc.) Lets say I did not delete any photos though...would it still shift everything over if I saved and closed before completing the report? Or once I batch add photos with a blank spot beside them, I need to 100% complete the picture editing process before saving and closing?
