TOPIC: Laptop Kits

Hey Dominic, Thanks again for all your help a week and a half ago getting my laptop up to speed with your remote access diagnosis and all your suggestions. You have inspired me to do more with computers. I am looking to get a barebones laptop kit and build it myself. Do you have a suggestion as to where to purchase one? I've been to Tiger Direct and (since they are owned by Circuit City I am nervous) and New Egg (their selection is small). Are there any others? Thanks.  ;D

Newegg is where I buy about 90% of my stuff from. Buy.com is ok but has lately become quite filled with ads and a pain to navigate. Zipzoomfly.com is another place you can check out as well as pricewatch.com (aggregates data from multiple sources).

To be honest, I've built over 500 computers in my time, but I have always purchased laptops. The reason being is that the screen of the laptop usually costs $400+ to replace if busted. The other parts are expensive as well. So the warranty on a laptop becomes more valuable as the parts are hard or at times impossible to buy on your own. There are also very few replacement parts that you can buy on your own and what you do get has to fit whatever case you chose.

That being said, you can definitely build you own, just make SURE you know what the manufacturer warranty is on every part you get. If you need any help, just let me know
