TOPIC: Do You Use A Moisture Meter and>>

If you use a moisture meter what is a decent one to get to try it out?

The two most commoly discussed amoung home inspectors are the Tramex and GE Surveymaster Protimeter. 

Tramex is an non-invasion meter.  Reportedly has a deeper reading capability than GE.  About $350-400

Surveymaster is both non-invasive and pin.  Non-invasive for tile, masonry, etc.  Pins for sticking into drywall, wood etc.  About $500

Some inspectors have both and use them for different applications. 

I have a Surveymaster.  The protective cap over the pins does not stay on very well.  I got a camera lens keeper strap (sticky pad on a string with elastic band on end).  Slip the elastic band around the meter and stick the pad to the cap.  When cap falls off, it dangles by the string instead of getting lost.  Caps cost about $5-$8 when you can find them. 

Thanks for the quick reply.  If you were to choose just one typ to start would you go with the pin type or non invasive type?

Non-invasive.  You cant stick pin type in tile around a toilet or a masonry foundation.

Either way you need to play with them a while.  Metal corner bead in drywall will give false readings.  Other similar metal and conductive conditions will give false readings.
