TOPIC: Question about IR cameras and odors

I'm asked by a realtor to help out a friend who for a year has been trying to find the origin of an odor in his house. 

He has removed sheetrock, torn up carpet and can't find it.  His wife can't smell because of medications, his kids can't smell it ( because they smoke supposedly) . 

I'm not sure what I'm getting into, sounds kind of creepy.  Is this an application for a IR camera?  I'm not in a position to buy one now but just wondering if one would help.

If the issue was due to mold or maybe even some dead animal it might help. I think Jay talked about a similar issue in the past.

An IR Camerea may help in this situation. But I am also a firm believer that the nose................knows. More than likely it is not a dead animal, as the smell would be gone by now, unless they had a cow or horse die in the home, lol. Probably moisture related, in my opinion.

Send me a travel voucher and I'll find and fix that....

I wasn't going there to diagnose a odor problem, it just came up.  The problem was a lack of insulation.

Trying to find odors is one of those things that can be very difficult.  If the odor has been around for a year or so, you can just about rule out an animal.  After about 6 months even a large critter will stop smelling, once it has dried out!

I would be thinking more along the lines of an open vent in a wall.  An IR camera would not really help with this.  A smoke test might help to locate an open vent, problem is if it is in a wall and locating it.  You know that every sink, toilet, tub and shower is going to have a vent line.  So that is a start.
