Kyu,
Yes, there are times where insulated exterior-rated wiring is run overhead for out-buildings. There are some problems though with the installation in your photos. 1. There are no guy-wires supporting the wiring to the garage. This means the wiring is under considerable tension and there is the risk of damage to the wires themselves. 2. The standard for clearance at the garage would most likely be the same as a main service drop which is 18" I believe. There are several other parts to this installation which should be considered as well. What does the wiring pass over and what are the clearances to objects below? What type of wiring and what size of wire is present, is it properly sized and rated? How are the mastheads secured and how tight is the wiring pulled? I'm sure some other guys can give you a few more thoughts as well. |

Yes, standard service drop clearances apply.
Additionally to what Cameron posted, the NM sheathing must be rated for UV exposure (the sheathing will be identified by a stamp or marking stating it as such). If it is not rated for UV exposure, it is an incorrect application and should be corrected. But based on your photos, there are some readily visible issues that pose potential safety concerns such as lack of drip loop, support wires (as Cameron stated,) and potential clearance issues over the roof. My opinion, the sheathing on those wires does not appear UV rated and I would look closely for deteriorated sheathing/insulation, and exposed conductors |
