Reverse polarity is unsafe in some situations because the atached devices depend on having the proper wire connected to the neutral. Simple example - for a lamp the shell is normally connected to the neutral while the the post that contacts the base of the bulb is connected to the hot. If those are reversed, a 'hot' shell could be more easily contacted by someone when reaching in to run the lamp off, etc. if all the shielding materials are not perfectly in place.
