Okay, reality check! :-\
Since I think the iPhone is going to be too much of a pain to use (due to the size) during an inspection and the iPad for for me is too big and bulky to carry around, I am considering getting the kindle fire. I can pick one up here used for about $140. How does it synchronize with my laptop computer? Right now I have HIP installed in my dropbox so I can use it on my desktop machine or my laptop and all my templates are always saved as the newest version of matter which machine I'm on. BTW I am running Mac.

Greg everything you enter on the HIP Android mobile install goes straight into your home computer.
It is automatic through the cloud.
You simply upload your templates from the desktop,laptop,tablet,etc,version you use now and then can pick one to use on the Kindle from the mobile app.
Once you name the inspection all your selections are waiting for you to hit the sync button and it downloads from the cloud.
This takes split seconds.
To help visualize simply think of how you send an email and it shows on all devises....that is the cloud at work.No USB attachment needed.

However, I would need to have full time internet activity for that to happen. Some places I go I can't even get a good cell service.

Does not need constant connection.
You can bluetooth or wifi it as well.

Now having a lousy provider is on you. Lol.

You only need Internet when download a new template to your phone or sending the inspection to the cloud. You could do that at home if you want.
