TOPIC: Keep the photos with their Heading

Keep the photos with their Heading 13 years 8 months ago #39618

Ok, here's my idea or maybe I should call it a formatting change.  I would really love it if headings and photos under those headings were forced to stay on the same page.

I'm finding that many times the photos jump to the next page and they are there all alone at the top of the page with no indication which section they are under. I know this would possibly increase the empty space on the page prior, but I'm not afraid of the white space.  Even if this were just a formatting option it would be nice.  It's just my personal taste, but I think it looks better when everything related is on the same page.

Another option would be to have a "*Heading* Continued..." which would print at the top of the page if the section is split.

So that's my idea. Keep it or kill it, just be gentle. :)

"Heading continued" would make more sense.

At what point is too much white space, too much? What if you would lose 3/4 of a page because you have all that text? What if you have more than a page? What if you have a 1/4 a page. This is the kind of thing that we have to decide on!

I was considering the same thing when I thought about "Heading Continued".  It seems after a 1/4 to a 1/3 of the page opening up to empty white space, it would just be better to let the normal page break occur and have comments and photos fall where they may.  Once you hit about half of the page empty, I think it looks a little odd.  I have combined some sections in my template for that very reason.  I didn't want to have 15 headings in a section, but I REALLY wouldn't want just 2-4 headings where all the components are satisfactory and the page looks empty.

On a related note, it seems like the summary items/serious damage comments would be a logical page break point as well since there is a good chance the photos you would take would be of the most serious items.  Since they show up as the last comments in a section, having them break and including a "Heading Continued" might (and that's a big "might") work as well.  I assumed that was the reason the serious damage comments fall at the end of the section, because they would usually relate to the photos anyway.

P.S. I just "discovered" that the comments you make show up in the drop down list for photo captions.  That's really nice...

Yup, I forget who suggested the drop downs to be preloaded in the caption box but we added it last year and it's definitely a great feature!

I think adding a "Heading Continued" option will be the easiest way for now, then we can look at other options in the future. Let me explore some of the best ways to handle this. Handling page breaks is often one of the most difficult things to do when generating a report as you have to make a decision before the content is actually added to the page (which we've got a few tricks to work around).
