Well, without another photo or info, I would try to determine if these joists are structural other than holding the finish of the ceiling below. If they are not transferring weight or holding the bottom of some pitched roof together, then they may not be an issue. It is possible they need to be secured just to prevent them from tipping. That could be done using lateral bracing or blocking. They don't appear to stick out very far, so the weight of the overhang shouldn't cause the rest of the joist to "lift", but that is, at best, a very uninformed statement on my part as the photo doesn't show the rest of the joist.
The fact that they do not connect together or that the end of the joists aren't supported may or may not be an issue. It all depend on their function, which again, cannot be determined just from the photo. If their function cannot be determined on site during the inspection, then refer to a specialist for further evaluation. That's about the best advice I can offer. |

Kyu,
I concur with Cameron's statement. There's not really anything any of us can say/advise without more info. Perhaps it would help if you as least explain to us what 'you' see, and why 'you' feel there may be an issue. Jeff |

Kyu, sorry so late to this thread, but what you have is raised ceiling areas on each side of the center area shown in this attic photo. As you say they are bedrooms below. As seen in pic is- raised framed ceiling/ boxed ceiling the 2x6 joists are sitting on a framing member. I would call it a beam, but can't tell from pic, other wise it would need to be on a wall which of course wouldn't be there at an inset raised/boxed up ceiling. As seen (barely)in pic the insulation is also seen above the step up ceiling area situation. This situation is pretty obvious w/ the minimal view of posted photo. This is a typical frame as seen in attic over bedrooms w/ step up ceilings. What may add to your concern from pic is that the joists sitting on the beam are not cut at beam but run past them. Lumber comes in 2' increments, so here they just let the joists run the lenght of the material used past the beam (no issue). Blocking, rat runs, strongbacks coulda shoulda been run to prevent twisting, sagging or other issues of these raised apparent 2x6 joists, but can't be verified from minimal photo view.
