TOPIC: HIP Glossary

HIP Glossary 8 years 3 weeks ago #63309

Some of us are using the glossary. Dominic is adding new definitions in the future. What abbreviations and definitions do you want to see and if you already have some, lets start a list we can all use. Some may not be used by others or may be regional. Lets list them anyway!

If people want to post their glossary files, that would be great. I was with Dominic at Inspector Fuel. His guys are putting together a glossary with the Inter-Nachi list that we will all be able to use. However, people may have some specific regional or other type of definition that they use. Whatever works to make the glossary comprehensive!

It would be great if guys posted their top few messages. I'll change the forum to allow xml in a bit. We're in the process of updating the forum system right now.

OK! Here is a few...
Stem wall
Stem walls are foundation systems constructed in three components; a spread footing to transfer load to the underlying soil, a (typically) masonry foundation wall, and a poured slab.

Monolithic slab
Monolithic slabs are foundation systems constructed as one single concrete pour consisting of typically a 4 inch thick concrete slab with interior thickened portions under load bearing walls and thickened at all perimeter edges.

Splash block
Splash block is a small masonry block laid with the top close to the ground surface to receive roof drainage from downspouts and carry it away from the building.

Polybutylene
Polybutylene (PB) was a plastic manufactured between 1978 and mid-1995 for use as piping in home plumbing systems. It was inexpensive and offered plenty of advantages over other materials, such as flexibility, ease of installation, resistance to freezing. Pipes made from polybutylene were installed in up to 10 million homes in the Unites States during that period. Despite its strengths, production was ceased in mid-1996 after scores of allegations surfaced claiming that polybutylene pipes were rupturing and causing property damage.

Ridge cap
Ridge cap. Cover of metal, tile, etc., over the ridge, sealing the joint between the two sides of a pitched roof.

Pressure-relief valve
Pressure-relief valve is a valve that relieves excess pressure in water storage tanks.

Tuckpointing
Tuckpointing: Is a repair process which repairs and/or replaces the mortar joints which stops the destructive process. The mortar joints become damaged due to harsh weather conditions, particularly excessive amounts of water.  Moisture can even damage rock masonry, when water gets in due to weakened mortar joints.
