TOPIC: Minding My Own Business, And The Phone Rings

Re: Minding My Own Business, And The Phone Rings 15 years 9 months ago #8493

I don't blame you for thinking about it.  I find it odd that they didn't give more time for bid preparations.

Just remember, this could be your next big hurdle to taking your business to the next level.  Just depends on how big you want to take things.

Don't rely on day laborers. That will just get you into trouble.

I can put you in touch with at least 10-12 inspectors using Home Inspector Pro or our website hosting in Virginia. Like you said previously if you do this, you're more than likely to get more bids in the future from other districts and this district again. As well as other inspection related jobs.

Let me know if you need contact info for inspectors I know.

They can't expect all the inspectors to have experience with Radon detection in schools and that doesn't make a difference for the test, it's just something they'd 'like.' If this is the first time they're doing this there might not be anyone else with that experience.

Thanks Dom.  Here's what I am thinking.  There are 39 schools.  They want the devices placed mornings between 6 and 8am.  It will take that long just to place and label all the devices.  If I could garner 19 inspectors, we could each handle one school, Monday morning, and one Tuesday, or 9 inspectors to drop off Mon and Tues for pick ups two days later.  Then dump it all into a bag for each school and ship (or schlep) it all to the lab.  They send the results,  which I would then organize into spread sheets and whap, bap, we put them into notebooks and turn them in.  The time frame is a bit difficult, but I can do most anything I try to do.

You should be able to label all the devices in advance since they're sending you maps.

Here's the most important thing to remember. The worst that can happen.... is they say no. That's the same as not trying! THEY contacted you. THEY found you, liked your site and asked you to do the job.

It's hard to label them in all advance.  There are protocols - every room which touches the ground must be tested.  That is straight forward.  But every trailer which has a partition needs two devices and that we wouldn't know until we get there.  Probably most can be labeled beforehand, but not all.  The duplicates would have to be labeled on site, as the blanks and strikers too.  But those would represent only a fraction of the total numbers.  One of the emails was a map of each school.  So we have that now.

Jay, I agree do NOT go with day labor. If you plan on teaming up on this, you need to make sure it is with inspectors YOU trust or are recommended from a trusted source, such as DoM, some of  us, or what have you. The great thing is, you seem to have a fairly good plan in your head, and are tying it together one piece at a time. Good luck, I really hop e you land this one.
