Hi guys, I need your help from you guru's out there.
My wife bought herself an Acer Lap top a month ago and using it to access the internet through a router that I installed. I am on DSL and bought the extra protection with the plan and also have AVG free addition on my PC. The Acer came with a free limited time McAfee protection and is now expireing. Is the lap top getting the same protection as my PC or do I need to install the AVG free addition on her lap top also.? Or is the laptop protected through DSL virus protection I am paying for. Thanks for any help. |

Marcel, you will need to install the anti virus on her or any computer you want to protect, as they are machine specific and not network specific.

Technically, you are behind a firewall if she only connects through the router. The router's IP address is the only thing exposed to the "Net", they do not actually see your computer.
Check out Microsoft's Security Essentials. It is free and works great. It has had great reviews from several pundits in the tech field. I'm currently using it on all my machines on this 4 computer home network. Ultimately, the best security is the firewall between your ears! Most infections and malware is the result of the USER allowing it into the system, not from a hack or attack. Doing stupid things like clicking on a link in an email that you get from someone you don't know. Not educating yourself on the red flags of a "social engineering" aspects of hackers these days will get you infected. NEVER, NEVER click on a link in an email from your bank or any other account that asks you to use the link to log in to your account. If you get an email like that, simply forward it to the purported sender's fraud department. Most hack attempts are not about destroying your machine, they are an attempt to get you to freely give up your personal information like logins and passwords to accounts for identity theft or to install a "bot" (as in robot) program that will give them control of your computer so that it can be networked together with hundreds or thousands of others just like you to send millions and millions of spam messages out. Over 90% of email now days is spam coming from "botted" computers just like yours. The user is usually totally unaware of the compromise. They may see some slow down and degrade in performance but most don't even notice or blame it on the crappy computer they bought. BTW, I test and review software for an on-line publication called Neat Net Tricks. Check it out. Lots of very useful information for "average" users, not tech heads. |
