I see that there is an auto alias check box for the URL. What exactly does that do? I assume it makes an alias, but how does that affect me when working on a site?

A lot of people forgot to create GOOD URL paths. This auto creates one that the site guesses is decent based on the page title. So if you forget, it'll be there working towards your SEO. It's still better to choose your own though!
